After attaining the status of ‘Cyber City’, Gurgaon is well on it is way to achieve the distinction of a world-class ‘Health City’ with as much as Rs.2000 crore of investment plans set in motion by healthcare major, Fortis, renowned cardiologist Dr. Naresh Trehan and Appolo Tyres group to set up world-class healthcare facilities. The prestigious Rs.670 crore ‘MediCity’ project promoted by Dr. Naresh Trehan of Escorts Hearts Institute has already taken off the ground with the start of construction work last week. Named as the Institute of Medical Sciences and Holistic Therapy, this hi-tech medical facility will be spread over 43 acres in Sector 38.
MediCity will have a 900-bed world-class hospital with 17 super specialities, 24 hi-tech air-conditioned operation theatres equipped for robotic surgery, 16-storey OPD tower and helipad for air evacuation for critical patients. There will be a medical college and the biggest diagnostic and R&D facility in the MediCity campus.
According to Sunil Sachdeva, co-promoter of the MediCity, it will be the first of its kind of healthcare project in the country that will have the seamless integration of allopathic, unani, ayurvedic and homeopathic treatment for which specialists from India and abroad will be sourced.
This ultimate medical facility, according to Sachdeva will have about one and a half dozen super specialities like cardiology, neuro, oncology, ortho, cancer, kidney, etc. There will be Rs.150 crore diagnostic centre for which the promoters of MediCity have tied up with GE. Billed as the John Hopkins of East or Miyo Clinic of the East, MediCity designed by world famous architect firm ARCOP of Montreal, will also revolutionise telemedicine.
Fortis Healthcare has lined up even bigger (Rs. 1000 crore) investment than Dr. Trehan for their comprehensive medical facility designed on the lines of MediCity. Named as the Fortis Institute of Medical and Biosciences, this mega project will have two super-specialty hospitals with focus on oncology and other areas of excellence. Global Consultancy McKinsey is preparing a blue print for the future business strategy of Fortis. And according to Fortis chairman, Harpal Singh, for their Gurgaon healthcare project that is scheduled for launch next year, they are in talks with Dr. Naresh Trehan, director of Escorts Heart and Research Institute that has been recently taken over by Fortis.
The latest to make healthcare foray into Gurgaon is Apollo Tyres Group, that is setting up a Rs.250 crore medical facility, complete with a modern hi-tech hospital and Clinical Research Centre. For its R&D centre, the company has plans to collaborate with University of Miami. Gurgaonites dream of having a world class Health City will come true by the end 2007 when the MediCity becomes operational. And once all the three mega health projects with a combined investment of about Rs.2000 crore are operational, Gurgaon will emerge as one of the biggest medical tourism destinations in the country.
