Encroachments on public land are a common sight across the city. But the problem moreover exists on the green belt areas declared by the HUDA. The residents of Phase II and III have been the most affected as the green belt between these two residential areas has been encroached by squatters and converted into small illegal markets.
The problem had started increasing, with the increase in the construction activity in the area. Many labours have been moving to the city in search of work and they generally start living in vacant spots near or open areas. Seeing the possible prospects of selling essentials, many small shops and dhabas also come up in the same area. Similar is the story of the area around these residential areas as well.
"Initially there were five or seven hutments, but the a whole colony has come up on the periphery. Many shops mostly dhabas and repair workshops have also come up here. They cause a lot of disturbance to the residents of the colony. They have not just been affecting the looks of the area, but have also been disturbing the peace of the colony," said Geeta Majumdar, a resident.
The RWA of the neighbouring areas have also taken up the matter with the HUDA officials but nothing concrete has been done till date.
However, now, the HUDA authorities have assured the residents that they would clear off encroachments and misuse of public land would be strictly delt with. "We have carried out several drives to remove these encrochemts in the past and would carry them in the time to come. No encroachment would be tolerated. They would be cleared soon as the work for construction of service lanes and widening of roads is starting soon," said HUDA Administrator SP Gupta. The residents are now hoping that these encroachments would be cleared soon as chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is expected to inaugurate the construction project soon.
