THREE gangsters were shot dead in the upmarket Sushant Lok area here in two separate encounters, spread over six hours, by Delhi and Gurgaon Police teams early today. Among the three was Hemant, on Delhi Police’s most wanted list, and his Najafgarh associates Jaiprakash and Jaswant- with around 41 cases - including murder and kidnapping - against them.
The encounter rattled residents in the area with one gangster fleeing from a hideout in Sagar Apartments to nearby Valley View Apartments, and holding residents of a flat hostage for a while, before being shot.
It all began at 12.15 am when a Delhi Police team, acting on a tip-off, reached Sagar Apartments in Sector 56. Led by ACP Sanjeev Yadav, the team forced its way into Flat No 505 and overpowered a man, later identified as Sanjay Singh.
Singh told police that Najafgarh gangster Jaiprakash was inside the flat and was trying to flee through the shaft. As the policemen found Jaiprakash, he reportedly opened fire and pulled out a grenade. ‘’It was then that Delhi Police informed us. We immediately sent reinforcements and decided to wait till daybreak,'’ said Gurgaon SSP Hanif Qureshi.
Meanwhile, Singh told police that Hemant and Jaswant were holed up in Flat No 9-1101, Valley View Apartments, on the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road. When the police team reached there around 6.45 am, Hemant started firing and Jaswant attempted to flee, again using the shaft, Qureshi said. Both were shot by the police, said Qureshi, adding that a revolver, a pistol and a countrymade weapon were found on them.
By then, Jaiprakash had made his way into Flat No 404 in Sagar Apartments, and took the owner Yash Choudhary, his wife and two children hostage.
SSP Qureshi then tried to negotiate with Jaiprakash over the intercom. ‘’He seemed very desperate, talking only about killing everybody and blowing up the place,'’ said Qureshi.
The SSP claims he finally persuaded Jaiprakash to move to the balcony. ‘’He threw down a pistol and later lowered a grenade, which was seized by our men on the third floor,'’ said Qureshi.
Meanwhile, he said, officers moved out the family and stormed the flat. ‘’Jaiprakash, who had another pistol with him, started firing indiscriminately. He fired 10 rounds but was shot dead around 7.40 am,'’ said Qureshi.
Gurgaon Police said Jaiprakash had bought the Sagar Apartments flat around six months ago, while the Valley View flat was taken on rent. Singh’s role is being investigated as he doesn’t appear to have a criminal record, they added.
