"She
left home at around 6 in the morning, I was just a
little bit behind her on the cycle. I was on my way to
fetch water. When I came to the area around her school,
I saw a crowd and came to check out what was happening
out of curiosity. I recognized her to be my daughter,"
said Shiv Dutt Pandey, Father of the victim.
This is the second tragic accident involving school
buses in two days.
On Tuesday, six schoolchildren drowned when their bus
fell into a canal in Sonepat.
The driver of the bus had claimed that the brakes failed
as he swerved to avoid a vehicle from the opposite
direction.
Safety norms in question
But these two accidents have raised questions about
safety on school buses.
Firstly, there was no faculty member on the Geeta Vidya
Mandir school bus that fell into the canal on Tuesday,
which is a violation of guidelines set down by the
Supreme Court.
Moreover, the DPS bus that ran over Annu was speeding,
which is yet another violation of the same guidelines.
Off the record, authorities at the DPS Maruti Kunj claim
that the credentials of the driver were checked before
he was hired and that he has 12 years of experience
behind him.
They also claim that as per the Supreme Court
requirements, there was a member of the staff present on
the school bus.
The school, however, refused to make any statements to
the press.
The driver of the DPS bus that killed Annu is being
questioned by Gurgaon police.
"The driver will be charged. How will the school be
responsible for anything?" said Mahendra Pal, IG,
Gurgaon.
Seven schoolchildren have lost their lives in two days.
Perhaps, it is time for the authorities to rethink
safety on school buses. |
