20km-long patch of NH-8
between Rajiv Chowk and Pachgaon was closed for the
traffic at 3.00 a.m., an hour after the accident.
Anticipating a flare-up,
Gurgaon range IGP Mohinder Lal, SSP Hanif Qureshi, DM
R.P. Bhardwaj, SDM S.N. Sangwan and other senior
officials reached the spot in the morning to pacify the
kawarias. The traffic movement could be restored at
10.30 a.m. only after the DM announced a compensation of
Rs 2.5 lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 25,000
for the injured.
The incident occurred at 2.00 a.m. when Leelu, Mohar and
Sanjay of Rewari, Haryana, were riding a motorcycle
carrying “Daak (mobile) kawar”. The moment they reached
near Pachgaon, a speeding truck (HR 55B 9612) hit their
motorcycle from behind. Leelu, 30, died on the spot,
while two others were seriously injured and rushed to a
Delhi hospital.
The news of the death of kawarias spread quickly and a
large number of kawarias started assembling at the site
of the accident. They also demanded government jobs for
the members of the family of the deceased.
Since the NH-8 was blocked, the Jaipur-bound traffic
coming from Delhi was diverted to Sohna-LawarTauro state
highway. The traffic coming from Jaipur towards Gurgaon/Delhi
was stopped at Pachgaon and diverted to Pataudi Road.
The situation was somewhat brought under control after
local MLA Sukhbir Johnpuria reached the spot to pacify
the agitated kawarias. The MLA announced a compensation
of Rs 1 lakh for the family of the deceased. Traffic on
Delhi-Hardwar highway resumes VEHICULAR MOVEMENT on
Delhi-Hardwar National Highway resumed after ten days on
Sunday.
The Delhi-Hardwar National Highway was closed for
vehicles since July 14 to ensure safe and smooth
movement of Kawar pilgrims. Traffic from Delhi to
Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Roorkee, which was
diverted to alternative routes, was resumed, sources
said.
Kawar pilgrims, on occasion of Maha Shivratri offered
holy water at Pura Mahadeo temple in Baghpat district
and Shiv Chowk on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a Kawariya drowned in the Muradnagar Ganga
canal on Saturday evening, police said. Sonu from Dadri
near Noida was bathing when he slipped into the canal,
they said adding that it was the second death in last
two days after Arvind from Delhi had also drowned. |
