Anticipating a flare-up, Gurgaon range IGP Mohinder Lal, SSP Hanif Qureshi, DM R.P. Bhardwaj, SDM S.N. Sangwan and other senior officials reached the spot in the morning to pacify the kawarias. The traffic movement could be restored at 10.30 a.m. only after the DM announced a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 25,000 for the injured.

The incident occurred at 2.00 a.m. when Leelu, Mohar and Sanjay of Rewari, Haryana, were riding a motorcycle carrying “Daak (mobile) kawar”. The moment they reached near Pachgaon, a speeding truck (HR 55B 9612) hit their motorcycle from behind. Leelu, 30, died on the spot, while two others were seriously injured and rushed to a Delhi hospital.

The news of the death of kawarias spread quickly and a large number of kawarias started assembling at the site of the accident. They also demanded government jobs for the members of the family of the deceased.

Since the NH-8 was blocked, the Jaipur-bound traffic coming from Delhi was diverted to Sohna-LawarTauro state highway. The traffic coming from Jaipur towards Gurgaon/Delhi was stopped at Pachgaon and diverted to Pataudi Road.

The situation was somewhat brought under control after local MLA Sukhbir Johnpuria reached the spot to pacify the agitated kawarias. The MLA announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the family of the deceased. The Delhi-Hardwar National Highway was closed for vehicles since July 14 to ensure safe and smooth movement of Kawar pilgrims. Traffic from Delhi to Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Roorkee, which was diverted to alternative routes, was resumed, sources said.

Kawar pilgrims, on occasion of Maha Shivratri offered holy water at Pura Mahadeo temple in Baghpat district and Shiv Chowk on Sunday.
