GURGAONITES who have along been vacillating between hope and despair over the much-talked about Delhi-Metro link to the city have finally good news coming there way in the from of Delhi Metro Corporation (DMRC) changing the alignment of metro away from the Qutab Minar monument.
Gurgaon’s Connectivity with Delhi Metro through Quatab Minar-MG Road route had run into rough weather with conservationists vehemently opposing it on the ground that Metro on the elevated tracks would mar the beauty of Qutab Minar.
As per the plan of Delhi Metro Corporation, the Delhi University-Central Secretariat line is to be extended up to Qutab Minar in the Second Phase, the work on which has
started and is to be complete before 2010 Commonwealth Games. Once Central Secretariat-Qutab link is in place, DMRC would link Qutab with Gurgaon (Rajiv Chowk) through MG Road in the Third Phase.
Following the opposition by conservationist bodies like INTACH to DMRC’s proposal to construct railway line linking Central Secretariat with Qutab Minar, that had in turn sealed the fate of Qutab-Gurgaon link,
Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had proposed to explore the feasibility of linking Gurgaon through Dwarka. The residents of New Gurgaon who had been fighting for bringing Metro rail to Gurgaon via Mehrauli route in turn opposed this.
DMRC sources reveal that keeping in view the objections of INTACH and Archaeological Survey of India, they have shifted the alignment of Metro Rail 500 mts. away form Qutab Minar to ensure that the elevated track in no way block the panoramic view of this world heritage site. Earlier, DMRC was toying with the idea of replacing 3 kms. Of elevated track near Qutab Minar with the underground track. But this was financially not feasible, as it would have put an additional financial burden of over Rs.450 crore on DMRC, which already faces a shortage of Rs.550 crore for laying metro line in the Rs.8118 crore Second Phase project.
DMRC officials are highly optimistic that their proposed alignment of Metro’s elevated rail track near Qutab Minar would meet the approval of both the Archaeological Survey of India as well as INTACH when DMRC gives its presentation to them in the second week of this month.
The Qutam Mehrauli-Gurgaon Delhi Metro route of 14 kms will cost over Rs.1500 crore. And with Haryana Government having already committed its part of funding, the Gurgaonites dreams of getting the Metro Rail link have now become a reality.
While the dream of New Gurgaonites for Metro Rail will be realized, the residents of Old Gurgaon, some HUDA colonies and private colonies like Palm Vihar are still keeping their finger crossed. These residents are banking on the Integrated Rail Bus Transit System (IRBT), which will provide Gurgaon’s interface with Delhi Metro. The project already cleared by the NCR Planning Board is still awaiting the crucial nod of the Planning Commission. If it gets the necessary go-ahead Gurgaonites can expect interface with Metro Rail before 2010 Commonwealth Games, much before the Qutab-Gurgaon Metro Rail link becomes functional.
